Creative Woodworking for Women

Saturday, March 16, 2019 (All day) to Sunday, March 17, 2019 (All day)

Woodworking has historically been a male dominated pursuit but it is great to see that this stereotype is slowly changing. In recognition of this change I am hosting this two day (women only) workshop which covers the fundamentals of woodworking but focuses heavily on the creative aspects of the craft.
This two day workshop starts off with an important discussion on safety, followed by a short explanation about the structure and properties of wood as well as the process of getting lumber ready for use.
After that you will be ready to get some hands on experience by each designing and making your own charcuterie board (cheese and meat board) which you will be able to take home with you. The objective is that you use your creative vision to help you decide what it is that you want your board to look like. Live edge, figure, epoxy insets, multiple species, organic or traditional shape, engraving, simple carving, and handle options will all be options for you to consider as long as it is feasible to finish in a two day time frame.
Material costs are not included in the price of the workshop because the cost of materials will depend on your preferences. There will be a selection of material choices available when you arrive and if you choose to use a more modest wood species like fir or cedar your cost of materials would be about $10.00. If a more exotic or highly figured wood better suits your taste or if you decide to incorporate an epoxy inlay your cost of materials will go up according to your choices. Here are some examples that can be found on the internet of charcuterie boards which can be made in a this workshop along with a rough estimate of their material costs and how challenging they are to make.
In the process of making your board you will be using the work horse of most woodworking shops which is the table saw as well as getting some experience using some combination of a jointer, planer, router, drill press, bandsaw and hand tools as we go through the different steps.
