What to do on Saturna Island Island: Must-Do Trails and Hikes

Southern Gulf Islands, Salt Spring Island, Galiano island, Mayne Island, Pender, Saturna,

Surrounded by picturesque landscapes and breathtaking views coupled with the soothing sounds of nature, Saturna Island can feel like another world. With many trails of varying length and difficulty, hiking is a popular activity amongst visitors and residents alike, where stunning views of the ocean, forests, and mountains greet every step. Here are some local favourite hikes on Saturna Island.

East Point Trail

Part of East Point Park, the trail takes you along the eastern edge of the island to East Point. It’s a relatively easy walk, with a gentle slope and well-maintained path. At the end of the trail, you will reach the easternmost point of Saturna Island. From here, you can see across the Strait of Georgia and watch for whales, seals, and other marine life. As part of The Whale Trail, it’s not-to-be missed.

Winter Cove Trail

Taking you through a beautiful forested area to Winter Cove, a peaceful and secluded bay on the island’s southern tip, the Winter Cove Trail is a 1.5km loop. The trail is relatively flat and easy, with a few sections that are rocky and uneven. Once you reach Winter Cove, you can relax on the beach, go for a swim, or explore the tide pools.

Narvaez Bay Trail and Monarch Head Loop

In the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, the Narvaez Bay Trail is a 2.3km hike that takes you through a dense forest to Narvaez Bay, a beautiful and secluded beach on the western side of Saturna Island. The trail is moderately difficult, with some steep inclines and rocky terrain. Once you reach Narvaez Bay, you can enjoy the sandy beach, swim in the crystal-clear water, and take in the beautiful scenery. If you’re up for more challenge, the Monarch Head Loop is a moderate to difficult 2.5km that quickly rises 100m in elevation to the viewpoint, this new trail branches off the Narvaez Bay trail and follows an old logging road up to an incredible view of Boundary Pass.

Lyall Creek Trail

Lesser known but worth the stop, the Lyall Creek Trail is a 1.4km hike that takes you through a beautiful forested area to Lyall Creek, a peaceful stream that flows into Lyall Harbour on the eastern side of Saturna Island. Best known for its scenic waterfall, be sure to visit after there’s been rain. In the fall, keep a close eye on the creek to see salmon spawning.
