Celebrate Pride in the Southern Gulf Islands

The Southern Gulf Islands is a pretty happy place, but that joy really explodes when the summer season rolls around—and it’s not just because the sun has come out. Summer season equates to Pride season, with the Islands’ communities coming together to celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ voices with parades, festivals, and workshops.

Whether you plan on island-hopping to all of the events or can just make it to one, we have a whole summer of activities honouring our community’s diversity.

Salt Spring Island Pride Festival

Salt Spring hosts one of the largest Pride celebration, in the past becoming a four-day extravaganza organized by Diverse and Inclusive Salt Spring Island (DAISSI), and held at the Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute. It has featured nonstop programming that uplifts queer voices and creative expression.

Festivalgoers can typically expect high-energy events like the Pride Dance, with performances by local DJs as well as visiting artists. Around the festival grounds, you’ll often find pop-up open mics, art installations, workshops, inclusive dialogues, and DAISSI-hosted community-building activities.

One of the can’t-miss events is typically the Pride Parade through Ganges—an annual, all-ages party on foot that winds through the heart of town, culminating in a celebration that spills into the community center and beyond.

Pender Pride

Each summer, Pender Island turns up the joy with its own take on Pride. The annual parade kicks off in front of the Pender Island Public Library, with colourful costumes, flags, and big island energy parading all the way to the Community Hall.

After the march, the celebration continues with music, guest speakers, food, and family-friendly activities. Organized by the Pender Island Pride Society, this event is one of many they host year-round. Pender Pride may be small-town in scale, but it’s big-hearted in spirit.

Saturna Island Pride

Saturna’s Pride festivities are community-led, and a little quirky—in the best way. The day typically begins at the Community Rec Center, where participants decorate bikes, or bring out their most over-the-top parade flair. The parade usually makes its way to Sheldane for the ceremonial raising of the Pride flag, and yes—dancing is very much encouraged.

Past years have seen Saturna host a cheeky Sausage Party at the Lighthouse Pub and an Orchard Party to dance the night away. This is island Pride done Saturna-style: A day of celebration, colour, dancing, music, laughter and possibly a bouncy castle!

Out in the Woods, No Space for Hate on Galiano

Galiano typically keeps things heartfelt and hyperlocal with intimate Pride events like Babes in the Woods’ front garden gathering. This cozy celebration is for queer islanders and their friends, with hot coffee from Galiano Roasting Co., treats from Oxeye, and community connection at the core. Here, visitors can pick up a “No Space for Hate on Galiano” sticker—a small but powerful badge of solidarity.

Celebrating Queer Joy in the Southern Gulf Islands

With events from June through August, Pride is a season-long affair across Saturna, Pender, and Salt Spring Island. Each island hosts unique celebrations to highlight the vibrancy of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

On the Southern Gulf Islands, Pride doesn’t live in a single weekend; it pulses through the seasons. Join us in showing up with joy, respect, and creativity. You’ll leave feeling not just welcomed, but woven in.

Welcome to island life. Welcome to the creative heart of BC.
