The Essentials: Know Before You Ride
- Terrain: Expect well-paved but narrow, winding, shoulderless roads with some blind corners and steep hills. Bring a well-maintained bike with gears.
- Safety: Ride with front and rear lights at all times (the island has minimal street lighting). Wear high-visibility gear, use caution on corners, and take up road space when necessary, pulling over to let traffic pass when safe.
- Navigation & Gear: Pick up the physical “Salt Spring Island on Wheels Map” at the Ganges Visitor Centre, as cell service can be unreliable. For gear, repairs, or e-bike rentals and tours, visit Outspokin’ Bike Shop in Ganges (250-931-2453).
- Supply Hubs: Ganges is the central hub for groceries and pharmacies. If arriving at Fulford Harbour, Salt Spring Mercantile Ltd. is right off the ferry for snacks, groceries, and local beverages.
Bike-Friendly Basecamps
- Ruckle Provincial Park: Walk- or bike-in rustic sites sloping down to the rocky coastline. Logistics: It is a challenging 1-hour-plus uphill ride from the Long Harbour or Vesuvius terminals; advance reservations are highly recommended.
- Mowhinna Creek Campground: Quiet, forested campsites located 1 kilometer outside of Ganges. Best for quick access to village amenities.
- Garden Faire Gallery Nursery & Campground: A central campground paired with a plant nursery and fairy garden, situated just outside of Ganges.
