Everything you ever wanted to know about Saturna Island

Southern Gulf Islands, Salt Spring Island, Galiano island, Mayne Island, Pender, Saturna,

Does Saturna have a grocery store? What is there to do on Saturna? If you’re planning a visit to this peaceful corner of the Southern Gulf Islands, chances are you’ve got a few questions before you go.

While Saturna may be one of the less-travelled islands, it still offers plenty of essentials (and even more surprises). From ferry logistics to food options, transportation, and things to do, this guide answers all your burning questions to help you plan a Saturna Island adventure.

Where is Saturna Island, BC?

Saturna Island is located in the Salish Sea between the West Coast of British Columbia and Vancouver Island. It’s the easternmost island in the chain known as the Southern Gulf Islands.

Is Saturna Island worth visiting?

Absolutely! Even if you’ve visited a few of the nearby Gulf Islands, you’ll find that Saturna has a vibe all its own. It’s one of the less-traveled areas, which means fewer crowds and many more surprises around every turn of its winding island roads.

Especially if you love the great outdoors, this place offers many magical moments, whether you’re looking out over the Salish Sea, hiking through quiet mossy forests, or camping at the Narvaez Bay Campsite.

What is Saturna Island known for?

Saturna Island is arguably one of the quietest regions in the Southern Gulf Islands, making it an ideal place to reset, relax, and disconnect from the outside world. It’s also one of the islands most known for its unique ecosystem: garry oak meadows, steep mountain terrain, and rocky coastlines where you may even see whales popping off from your perch on shore.

But this island is most famous for the Saturna Island Lamb BBQ, which has been happening for more than 75 years. It’s one part celebration of local lamb, one part Canada Day festivities, and 100% good old-fashioned fun. People have made it an annual tradition to head to Saturna for the BBQ and spend the day enjoying the bounty of Saturna.

As a bonus (and a more niche attraction), if you are a geocacher, Saturna has 60 caches scattered around, all maintained by Parks Canada and the Saturna Ecological Education Centre.

What is there to do on Saturna Island?

First and foremost, you need to get outside, with boots on the trail, to see its incredible landscape. From East Point Lighthouse to Winter Cove to Lyall Creek Trails and so many others, no matter your fitness level, there is a hike waiting for you here. According to most lists, the 9 out of the 10 best things to do on Saturna all revolve around getting outside.

Beyond Saturna’s natural landscape, this island is also a haven for those who relish locally made goods. Spend an afternoon sipping at Sage Hayward Vineyards with snacks provided by the Feral Goat Bistro. Stock up on local goodies at the famous Saturna General Store, and then dine at La Cucina in the evening. Don’t forget to check out the many farm stands while you’re at it.

What ferry goes to Saturna Island?

BC Ferries offers two core services to Saturna Island, one from Tsawwassen Terminal (near Vancouver) and another from Swartz Bay (near Victoria). If you’re travelling from another Gulf Island, these routes both circumnavigate the area, making stops at Lyall. Inter-island ferry schedules are much more irregular, so check the schedule before you go. All ferries disembark at Lyall Harbour on Saturna.

How do I get to Saturna Island from Vancouver?

To get to Saturna Island from Vancouver, you’ll travel via BC Ferries from the Tsawwassen Terminal, about 45–60 minutes south of downtown.

Technically, it’s the only bookable ferry route to Saturna, and reservations are highly recommended, especially during weekends, holidays, and the busy spring–fall season.

At the time of writing, there were no direct sailings from Tsawwassen. Instead, most routes make multiple stops at other Gulf Islands (like Galiano, Pender, and Mayne) before reaching Lyall Harbour on Saturna. Depending on the time of day and the route, the trip can take two to four hours.

Reservations can be made online with BC Ferries or by phone at 1-888-223-3779. Without a reservation, expect long waits during peak periods.

How long is the ferry to Saturna Island?

There are a few ferry routes and schedules that stop at Saturna, so it all depends on which ferry brings you here. But generally speaking, getting to Saturna Island is more of a scenic voyage than a quick commute.

If you’re setting off from Vancouver, you’re looking at a two- to three-hour trip, depending on the day’s route and connections. From Victoria, the ride can be much shorter with a few direct sailings, but those can be infrequent.

The BC Ferries Schedule is your best bet for confirming duration. Check it before you go, especially if you’re making same-day travel plans or trying to coordinate a round trip.

Can you drive on Saturna Island?

Yes! In fact, because of Saturna’s mountainous topography and attractions that are spread out across the island’s 31 square kilometres, most people prefer to explore by car. Most of the island is served with paved roads, with a few well-maintained gravel roads suitable for most vehicles.

But, island roads are notoriously winding with no shoulder and no street lights. Keep an eye out for cyclists, pedestrians, and wildlife, especially at night.

Is Saturna Island walkable?

Generally speaking, a trip to Saturna is most enjoyable when you have a form of transportation, whether it’s a car or a bike. Check Google Maps for specific directions from the ferry terminal to your accommodation, but if you’re on foot, you’ll most likely face quite the hike up some pretty steep roads. For context, it’s about a 25‑minute walk from the ferry terminal to the Saturna General Store.

Of course, that isn’t to say people don’t adventure around Saturna on their own two feet! If you’re visiting Saturna without a vehicle, the Saturna Shuttle Service is your best bet for getting around. Operated by local volunteers, the shuttle runs on a donation basis, with proceeds supporting both the service and the Lions Club. To book, text (604) 760‑9975 or email saturnashuttle@gmail.com at least 48 hours in advance.

Otherwise, you’ll need to rely on good old-fashioned island hospitality! Chat up a fellow traveller on the ferry or try hitching a ride.

Where should I stay on Saturna Island?

Saturna Island offers peaceful oceanfront and quiet forested getaways perfect for couples, families, and solo travelers. Check out Bella Haven, Four Winds B&B, and Saturna Lodge for a little inspiration. For those who are more adventurous and want to sleep under the stars, spend a few nights camped at Navez Bay Campground, a (short) walk-in right on the ocean.

Whatever accommodations you have in mind, it’s highly recommended to book ahead when planning a trip to Saturna. Remember, this is a small island with limited on-island accommodations.

Does Saturna Island have a gas station?

For those from the mainland, Saturna’s gas station may seem like a stretch of the imagination, but rest assured, you can definitely get gas on the island. It’s a single pump located right as you exit the ferry in Lyall Harbour. Inquire at the Saturna Point Store. Propane is available across from the Saturna General Store.

Does Saturna have a grocery store?

Yes! You can get everything you need and more to stock your Saturna adventure from the Saturna General Store, including fresh produce, meat, dairy, alcohol, and treats. In the summer months, you’ll also want to check out the local offerings at the Saturna Farmers Market and farm stands, year-round.

Does Saturna have a pharmacy or clinic?

No. There are no pharmacies or walk-in clinics on the island. Remember to bring medications with you, and if there is a medical, fire, or police emergency, call Emergency Services by dialing 911.

Are there any restaurants and dining options on Saturna?

Yes, Saturna Island does have a few local dining options. Check out The Lighthouse Pub, located near the ferry terminal, for casual West Coast fare and oceanfront views.

Inside the Saturna General Store, you’ll find Saturna Café, serving breakfast and lunch daily, with occasional dinner service on weekends. La Cucina on Saturna offers warm, Italian-inspired meals on Friday through Sunday evenings.

For something special, head to Sage Hayward Vineyards, where you can enjoy wine tastings alongside locally sourced dishes from the Feral Goat Bistro. Keep in mind that many eateries are seasonal, so it’s always best to check current hours before stopping in.

How many people live on Saturna Island?

Out of all the islands that make up the Southern Gulf Islands, Saturna has the smallest permanent population. With just 350 people who call this place home, life here typically happens at a slower pace than what you’ll find elsewhere. In the warmer months, though, daily life gets a bit busier, thanks to summer visitors and seasonal residents.

Are there bears on Saturna Island?

Although bears once inhabited most of the Gulf Islands, their populations were wiped out after settlers moved in in the mid-19th century. Today, there are no bears on Saturna Island.
