Suggested itinerary: Saturna

Southern Gulf Islands, Salt Spring Island, Galiano island, Mayne Island, Pender, Saturna,

Planning a weekend on Saturna Island? You’ve chosen the quietest and arguably the wildest of the Southern Gulf Islands. With just 350 residents and more protected wilderness than almost anywhere else in the region, there is a lot of room to stretch your legs here.

While a weekend on one of the other islands can feel jam-packed, a Saturna Island itinerary feels decidedly slower. There’s no rushing here. No crowds. Just the sound of the ocean, a very good chance of seeing a whale, and a welcoming community energy.

So without further ado, here’s how to spend three days on Saturna Island!

Day 1: Arrival

When you’re in the planning stages of a weekend of Saturna, aim for a mid-morning to early afternoon arrival. For those heading over from Vancouver, be sure to book a reservation. Otherwise, make sure you are at the ferry terminal an hour (or more in the summer) before the scheduled departure.

Afternoon

Your Saturna Island weekend begins the moment your ferry docks at Lyall Harbour. Take it in — you’ve arrived. It’s been just a short ferry ride, but you can probably already feel a different energy here.

Before heading to your accommodation, stock up on any provisions or forgotten items. The Saturna General Store has everything you need: fresh produce, local meats, freshly baked bread and pastries, specialty deli items, and a liquor store.

From there, check in, unpack, and resist the urge to rush out again. The whole weekend lies ahead of you. If Saturna has anything to say about it, you are going to slow down, and you are going to enjoy it.

Evening

For dinner, make your way to the Saturna Lighthouse Pub. This is where you’ll find everyone from boaters and kayakers fuelling up to locals sharing the latest news. Open daily for lunch and dinner, the menu focuses on pub fare and specials featuring local lamb and seafood.

The patio looks out over the water, and if the timing is right, you’ll catch a sunset that makes everything else feel very far away. On weekends, the pub has live entertainment to go with the views. This is your welcome to Saturna.

Day 2: Market provisions and hiking

Morning

In summer, Saturday morning means one thing: the Saturday Market at the Saturna General Store. Head back down to this central location to meet just a few of the people who call the island home: the growers, the bakers, and the makers who are offering up fresh produce, homemade preserves, baked goods, used books, crafts, and artwork.

You’ll definitely want to stock up on snacks for later and perhaps a few treats for a lighthouse picnic. So fill your basket and your belly before heading into phase two of your Saturday adventure.

Hot tip: If you haven’t yet experienced the famous Saturna Island Lamb BBQ, you’ll definitely want to plan your summer trip to revolve around this spectacular community event.

Afternoon

Saturna certainly feels like one of the wildest Southern Gulf Islands, and if you want to work up a sweat, it rewards the adventurous spirits. There are two Saturna hikes in particular that warrant a full afternoon of exploration:

Brown Ridge is a moderately challenging out-and-back trail with stunning ocean views and excellent birdwatching. You’re unlikely to encounter many other people along the way, but if you’re lucky, you may meet some of the other local residents — Saturna’s famous feral goats.

For a wilder, more immersive experience, the trail out to Bruce Bight Beach follows (marked) old goat paths along the ridgeline, past twisted trees and rocky bluffs. This is a special place; it’s a one-of-a-kind ecosystem that only exists here in the Gulf Islands. You’ll be rewarded with spectacular ocean views along the way and, of course, the wide and welcoming beach at the end.

If you make it back to your car with enough daylight left, stop in at Sage Hayward Vineyards for a tasting or a bottle to take back with you. This family-owned winery offers stunning views over the Salish Sea, and with a bistro on site, you may end up staying for dinner.

Evening

Tonight, you have a few options on the table. Check the Saturna General Store’s socials for one of their special dinner menus. If you’re fortunate, you’ll catch one of their beloved pop-ups! Reserve immediately, as these evenings sell out fast!

Otherwise, head to La Cucina for authentic Neapolitan pizza and fresh handmade pasta. From the very first bite, you’ll feel welcomed into La Familia. Plus, as we alluded to after your hike, you may have found yourself lingering at Sage Hayward Vineyards. Good! Their on-site bistro, the Feral Goat, is another standout dinner option.

Day 3: Heritage and snacks

Morning

Spend the morning slowly waking up, enjoying a coffee at your accommodation. Remember, on Saturna, there is no reason to rush. Once you’re packed up, your final morning here belongs to East Point.

Start at the East Point Trail (part of East Point Park). The trail runs along the eastern edge of the island and is a relatively easy walk, with a gentle slope and a well-maintained path. Gradually meandering to the ocean, this trail leads to the perfect spot for whale-watching. You won’t need a boat; just make your way to the point. At the end, the easternmost point of Saturna Island, you can see across the Strait of Georgia. Be on the lookout for wildlife, like whales, seals, and seabirds.

And at the point, you’ll also find the Saturna Heritage Centre, housed in the historic Fog Alarm Building. Here you’ll find exhibits about the area, island history, whales, and much more.

Afternoon

Before you head for the ferry, it’s time for a proper Saturna picnic. Pull out everything you gathered at the Saturday Market (the bread, the preserves, the sausages, and other treats), then find a spot on the point. If it’s too windy, make your way back to the ferry side of the island and enjoy a picnic at Winter Point.

With your departure time looming, head back toward Lyall Harbour and give yourself plenty of time before your scheduled ferry, especially in the summer months. It’s usually recommended to arrive with at least an hour’s grace, as there are no reservations available for those leaving.

Whether you came for Saturn’s hiking, the food, the wildlife, or simply the promise of exploring somewhere genuinely off the beaten path, a Saturna Island weekend will surely have filled every cup. In fact, you’re probably thinking about your next trip here.
